If you’re looking for a quiet oasis in the midst of a bustling metropolitan area, then you should consider moving to Wayne, PA. Wayne sits just 10 miles west of Central Philadelphia. This unincorporated town was originally named Louella by prominent banker J. Henry Askin, but it was renamed after General Anthony Wayne in 1880. Today, this town straddles three counties and sits on the Pennsylvania Main Line with an estimated population of 30,000 people.
This is primarily a bedroom community, but there are still plenty of points of interest. The Chanticleer Estate and Botanical Garden covers 27 acres of land on the south side of town. This estate includes a pond, several walking trails, and dozens of plant species from April to October. You can also find the Valley Forge Military Academy and College on Eagle Road. This is a private military school and junior college that was founded in 1928, and remains the only American military school to use British drills and traditions.
Wayne doesn’t have much in the field of specialty shopping or entertainment, but that is part of the town’s charm. Most shops and businesses are in the central business district at Lancaster and Wayne Avenues. There are several small specialty shops, restaurants and cafes downtown, and the Radnor Middle School can be found just across Lancaster Avenue from many of them.
There are plenty of small parks, like Odorisio Park and Friends of the Radnor Trail Park. They offer plenty of fun for the whole family. Hikers will love the Radnor Trail, which runs through the south-central part of town on its way across Radnor Township. If you love historical buildings, the Wayne Station along the Pennsylvania Line was built in the early 1880’s and is currently on the National Register of Historic Places.
